The uterus of mammalian species plays the central role in providing the appropriate environment for the establishment and maintenance of pregnancy. The coordinated actions of estradiol (E) and progesterone (P) are essential for all stages of pregnancy from implantation to parturition. These steroid hormones exert their effects on gene expression primarily through specific receptors (R) present in uterine tissue and compartmentalized within different cell types. Because of their central importance in female reproductive functions, the presence and regulation of these ligand-inducible transcription factors have been the focus of numerous studies. Although many other regulatory molecules are believed to be part of the hormonal cascade of action triggered by E and P, these factors and their roles in pregnancy are discussed elsewhere in this volume.
