Abstract
The anatomical right atrium in the chick is formed only by the primitive right atrium because of the fact that the sinus venosus is connected to this atrium but it is not incorporated into it. The anatomical right atrium in man is constituted embryologically by the primitive right atrium and by the sinus venosus. The anatomical left atrium in the chick is constituted only by the primitive left atrium and, in man, is formed by the primitive left atrium and the sinus of the pulmonary veins. By means of the septation process the atria acquire their septal wall. The primitive atria in both species are the only primitive cardiac segments that from their initial appearance are situated one to the right and the other to the left, according to the bilateral right and left symmetry of the organism; all other primitive cardiac segments are formed in series. As a result of this fact, the atria are the only cardiac cavities that can be used for the diagnosis of type of situs.
