Abstract
Because a basic, well-organized surgical plan is important whether one is dealing with a simple or a very complicated rhinoplasty, I have established and always try to follow these Ten Commandments of Ethnic Rhinoplasty:
-
I.
Carefully evaluate the individual’s anatomy, physiology, and psychology.
-
II.
Establish realistic goals for the patient and for yourself
-
III.
Prepare a detailed preoperative evaluation and surgical plan.
-
IV.
Consider the use of preoperative “BASICS” (Benadryl, Antibiotics, Steroids, Ice, Compression, and Standard Surgical Preparations).
-
V.
Mix your own fresh local anesthetic with epinephrine.
-
VI.
Maintain nasal airway function.
-
VII.
Use only autologous grafts whenever possible.
-
VIII.
Control swelling and bleeding intraoperatively with “ICE” (Ice, Compression, and Elevation).
-
IX.
Prepare a postoperative care plan such as “DAMP” (Dietary and Activity restrictions, Medication, and Pressure).
-
X.
Perform revision procedures only when truly warranted.
