Abstract
In the 1870s physics seemed on the verge of being able to describe the world in its entirety. Mechanics allowed the calculation of the behavior of solid bodies; thermodynamics showed the transformation and interaction of different aggregate states and made it possible to determine energy balances. Finally scientists could explain the electric and magnetic forces and their consequences on matter using electrodynamics.
