Abstract

Our group at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (formerly Deaconess Hospital) and a team at Circe Biomedical, Inc. (formerly Grace Biomedcal, WR Grace and Co.-Conn) have studied the use of a vascularized bioartificial pancreas (VB AP) for treatment of diabetes for the past 6 years.1–4 We were the first to demonstrate the long-term use of a bioartificial pancreas in large animals, and our data represented the longest survival of discordant xenogeneic islets. In this report we will briefly describe the VBAP device, a large animal diabetes model, experimental results with the use of allogeneic and xenogeneic islets in the device, and plans to initiate a clinical trial of the VBAP containing porcine islets for treatment of patients with earlystage IDDM.
