In this chapter we give some definitions and theorems that will enable us to put the results obtained in the course of the previous chapter in a broader context. Thus the infinitesimal method which we have used for different groups, consisting in calculating the infinitesimal generators, was developed by Sophus Lie. It has the effect of reducing the study of Lie groups to the study of what are called their Lie algebras.
