Abstract
When designing or introducing a knowledge base system to support managerial decision making at the highest corporate level, an analysis of the nature of strategic decision making must be made. This chapter discusses strategic decision problems and classifies them by type and strategic level. Information sources and techniques are analyzed (Mintzberg, 1980, Mintzberg and Quinn, 1991, (Savolainen and Liu, 1995). The task field of decision making is only partly supported by executive information systems (EISs) (Partanen and Savolainen, 1995). We also identify the types of strategic decision problems that could be addressed by knowledge base technology in an executive decision support system, which we call an intelligent executive support system.
