Abstract

Perianal Crohn’s disease challenges even the most experienced of surgeons who treat inflammatory bowel disease. Malnutrition, poor wound healing, a propensity for recurrence, and the fear of serious anal sphincter impairment haunt both the patient and the surgeon and warrant a conservative approach. Fortunately, many patients with perianal Crohn’s disease can be treated nonoperatively. When definitive surgical procedures are necessary, a number of recent reports have demonstrated that they can be performed with good results (1–5).
