Abstract
As we have noted before, most students seeking a residency position in the United States go through the NRMP process. There are, however, some situations and exceptions that modify the process: If you are looking for a career in neurology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, or urology, you will participate in your own specialty matching process. The residency programs offered by the various branches of the military have a separate matching process, as do programs in Canada or those specific to osteopathic medical students. The special needs of couples who wish to match together provide another set of opportunities and problems that carry their own set of nuances. Understanding how these particulars change the process allows you to turn special circumstances into special opportunities.
