Part of the book series: Applied Mathematical Sciences ((AMS,volume 66))

Abstract

An important application of the theory of variational inequalities has been found in the problem of one-sided contact of elastic bodies. This problem was formulated in a simplified form by Signorini as early as 1933 for the specific case of one-sided contact of one body with a perfectly rigid and smooth foundation. The Signorini problem was studied by Fichera (1964, 1972), who gave the proof of existence and regularity of the weak solution, and discussed the problem of nonuniqueness of solution.
