In this first chapter we introduce the subject of graph theory by first presenting some of the problems, both frivolous and practical, that led mathematicians to discover and rediscover some of the fundamental concepts of the subject. After a brief historical introduction, we set The Theory of Graphs on a firm mathematical foundation with some basic concepts and definitions.
