Abstract

Harald Cramér was born in 1893 in Stockholm, Sweden. He attended Stockholm University in 1912 and graduated with a Ph.D. degree in mathematics in 1917. He became interested in actuarial mathematics (applications of mathematics to insurance) and was appointed to a chair in actuarial mathematics and mathematical statistics in 1929. Details of his life and work may be found, for example, in the obituary by Leadbetter (1988) and references therein. Here we indicate only some influences leading to the present paper.
