Modeling the Order of Disability Events in Activities of Daily Living Using Discrete Longitudinal Data

Abstract

Longitudinal data are used to develop an empirical model for the ordering of a set of events. The empirical ordering is based on the median times to the separate events obtained from estimated survival distributions from a learning dataset. Nonparametric methods are used to validate the empirical order within a person. Also, the probability of developing a specific event is modeled given time-dependent covariates. The approach is used to order the age of initial disability in activities of daily living (ADL) using longitudinal data collected biennially over six years of followup on 5151 elderly people participating in the Longitudinal Study on Aging. Due to the presence of disabilities for some people on study entry and to the periodic nature of data collection, event times are interval censored. The median age to initial disability is estimated for each ADL using survival distribution methods for truncated and interval censored data from a learning dataset. An empirical model, based on the ordered median ages across ADLs, is supported by the test dataset validation. This model differs from orderings proposed in the literature using cross-sectional data. The probability of developing disability in a specific ADL is modeled using a generalized linear model that relates the discrete hazard rate to a time dependent disability profile
