Abstract

The IMU is a Scientific Union Member of the umbrella organization ICSU, with which it is connected in many ways. Until the mid-1970s, the activities of the IMU depended essentially on the subventions it received from ICSU. The Union has itself formed permanent subcommissions with terms of reference of their own: the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI), in 1952; the Commission on Development and Exchange (CDE), in 1978; and, jointly with the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science, the International Commission on the History of Mathematics, in 1987. In addition, the IMU has been increasingly interested in establishing contacts with organizations representing applied mathematics or fields close to mathematics.
