Abstract
To calculate the electrostatic energy of a charge distribution in vacuum, we have brought the chargesq i to the positionsr i in a gedanken experiment, and the necessary work has been calculated. At once, we see that in a dielectric work has to be done not only against the potential but also to build up the polarization of the dielectric.
