Abstract
In Chapter 2 we introduced the general idea of a software reliability model and that of the failure rate of software. Over the last two decades, a considerable amount of effort has been devoted to developing software reliability models—by some counts, there appear to be over one hundred. The aim of this chapter is to give an overview of a few of the most commonly used models by software engineers, and to introduce the reader to some of the more recent developments in the overall enterprise of model development. The issue of how to use these models in applications involves the topic of statistical inference, and this has been delegated to Chapter 4.
