Although cancer is more feared and AIDS has a more sinister face, it is plain old “heart disease” that kills the majority of Americans. More properly, it is atherosclerosis, a disease in which blood vessels become blocked by deposits of cholesterol (atheroma) and hardened (sclerosed). The vessels most often affected are the arteries, hence the related term arteriosclerosis, “hardening of the arteries.” When it is the arteries that supply blood to the heart itself, a heart attack results; when it is the arteries of the brain, the consequence is a stroke.
