Vitamin E

A Vitamin in Search of a Disease

  • Chapter

Abstract

Sixty years have passed since the discovery of vitamin E. It is today as controversial as ever. At one time or another it has been advocated for the treatment of several dozen different diseases. Presently, vitamin E is particularly popular with those who have, or fear that they will get, heart disease, cancer, circulatory disorders, or any of the problems of aging. Because these categories exclude hardly anyone over the age of forty, it isn’t hard to understand the enormous consumption of vitamin E in this country. In 1989, about 10 million pounds of vitamin E were produced for medicinal purposes; its dollar value is second only to that of vitamin C.
