Abstract
Kawasaki disease (KD), originally termed mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome, is an acute systemic vasculitis of unknown etiology that primarily affects infants and young children. First recognized and described in Japan in 1967 by Tomisaku Kawasaki, KD has since been reported to occur in both endemic and epidemic forms worldwide in children of all races (1,2). Its primary clinical features are prolonged fever, bilateral nonexudative conjunctival injection, induration and erythema of the hands and feet, inflammation of the lips and oral cavity, polymorphous skin rash, and cervical lympha- denopathy. Although KD is generally self-limited, with resolution of acute clinical symptoms in <1 mo from onset of fever, coronary- artery (CA) abnormalities may develop in up to 30% of patients. This may result in myocardial infarction, sudden death, or chronic CA insufficiency (3–5). KD is a multisystem vasculitis frequently associated with other cardiac and noncardiac complications. These include myocarditis, urethritis, arthritis, aseptic meningitis, gallbladder hydrops, and obstructive jaundice.
