Abstract
EBV humoral immunology has played a major role in studies directed at establishing a relationship between this virus and certain human cancers. These investigations, which were initiated in 1966 when the first test for detecting EBV antigens was reported (1), utilized a variety of EBV-induced antigens as targets and immunofluorescence as the primary methodology. These tests also established the importance of antibodies directed against some or all of the serologically defined EBV antigens in the diagnosis of EBV-associated diseases and for the clinical management of those patients with EBV-associated malignancies (2,3). Some of the more clinically relevant antibodies that have been identified by a number of investigators over the years are listed in Table 1. These include IgG, IgM and IgA antibodies to the different EBV antigen complexes as defined by immunofluorescence as well as antibodies to a variety of EBV-induced enzymes.
