Abstract
This chapter is intended for all those who plan to build or remodel their own homes. Unfortunately, relatively few Americans live in accommodations where they have had the opportunity to exercise control over the materials that went into them because most people in the United States either occupy dwellings that were previously owned or rent them from a landlord. Even the bulk of new housing is built on speculation, carried out by developers who acquire a tract of land and erect residences on it in the hope that they will be able to sell the units at a profit.
