Regulation of the Circulation of the Brain

A Systemic Approach

The term cerebrovascular regulation is only apparently simple to define. It is employed in physiological literature to denote the strong capacity of the cerebrovascular bed to adequately adjust cerebral blood flow (CBF) to the most various and rapidly changing external perturbations. Among the physiological or pathological disturbances that the cerebrovascular bed must be able to face during human or animal life, mention can be made of alterations in arterial or intracranial pressure (ICP), body postural changes, variations in brain metabolism, and changes in blood gas content.
