Women and Substance Abuse

A General Review

  • Chapter
Addictive Behaviors in Women

Part of the book series: Drug and Alcohol Abuse Reviews ((DAAR,volume 5))

Abstract

This chapter is a selective review of information about substance abuse effects in women. Because data summarized here are drawn from cross-sec-tional studies, treated prevalence studies, and laboratory experiments, it is necessary to recognize certain caveats. In all likelihood, complex biological factors influence individual vulnerability, and environmental aspects also shape behavior but may shift over time.1 Assumptions about factors that influence drinking and drug use behavior as well as definitions of problem drinking, alcohol abuse, alcoholism, drug use, and drug abuse vary across time and studies. Further, specifications of cutoff points for hazardous quan-tities or frequencies of alcohol intake (e.g., “heavy drinking”) also vary considerably and rarely are adjusted for gender. Men and women may require different questions in interviews, but often questions pertinent to women are simply added to those used for men. More regrettably, in some cases data may be obtained from men and women, but results are then combined.
