Abstract

Over the past few years, it has become increasingly clear that most drug treatment programs do not adequately address the psychiatric needs of the “dually diagnosed.” This oversight may be presumed to be at least partially responsible for the high relapse rate in addicts. To better define the problem, researchers have attempted to identify the axis I and axis II disorders that exist in various subgroups of addicted persons. The underlying assumption is that the patient's treatment needs will be able to be effectively managed once diagnoses are known.
