Abstract

The Aspergillus species has been associated with a wide variety of human diseases, ranging from invasive aspergillosis in the immunocompromised host, aspergilloma in pulmonary cavitary lesions, and allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) in the atopic asthmatic. Although the initial cases of ABPA were reported by Hinson et al. in the UK in 1952 (1) early reports of Aspergillus associate pneumonitis were communicated by Popoff and Ein Fall in 1887 (2) and Hamman in 1927 (3). Initially, ABPA was thought to be limited to the UK where 20% of asthmatics were considered to have the disease (4). However, increased numbers of cases of ABPA have been reported in the US as well as from other areas of the world over the past several years.
