Abstract

The hardest part of solving an optimization problem is formulating the objective function for it. To deal with this difficulty you might consider assigning optimization problems early in the calculus course and continuing them every assignment for the whole term. To “solve” an optimization problem before the derivative is formally available, plot the objective function and use the graph to extract an approximation to the extreme value.
