Abstract
PCR technology has helped catalyze the emergence of clinical molecular microbiology as one of the most promising recent advances in laboratory medicine. This technology can be applied to the detection of virtually any pathogen for which even limited DNA (or RNA) sequence information is known and in which a specimen of infected tissue or body fluid can be obtained. Beyond simple detection of a pathogen, PCR technology can potentially provide genetic information relating to the virulence, chemosensitivity, and epidemiological spread of a pathogen. The goal of this chapter is to provide an overview of the presently described diagnostic applications of PCR to infectious agents and to highlight anticipated new developments. These developments will likely establish PCR as an indispensable adjunct to more routine diagnostic methods and will likely facilitate the widespread introduction of molecular biology into the clinical microbiology laboratory.
