Homocysteine and the N-Methyl-D-Aspartate (NMDA) Receptor: Are They Keys to Conotruncal Abnormalities?

  • Chapter
Formation of the Heart and Its Regulation

Part of the book series: Cardiovascular Molecular Morphogenesis ((CARDMM))

Abstract

The data that have been obtained to date support the general hypothesis that NMDA receptor antagonists, including homocysteine, induce conotruncal, orofa-cial, and neural tube defects. It appears that this effect could be the mechanism of action for many of the most common risk factors for these defects, and that these risk factors may be able to interact synergistically to increase their pernicious effect on development.
