Abstract
Cardiac development is dependent on the normal expression of several growth factors and their receptors. This chapter reviewed much of what is currently known about the roles of some of these growth factors in the embryonic, fetal, and neonatal development of the heart. However, our understanding of the specific roles of these growth factors and their complex interactions with other chemical and mechanical signaling mechanisms is incomplete. As new probes and techniques are developed, it should be possible to further our understanding of these interactions and to determine the mechanisms by which growth factors affect heart development.
