Abstract

What did we think when some of us gathered in 1982 at the Gaithersburg, Maryland, conference on human-computer interaction? Did we envision all that CHI and the world of CHI, HCI, UI, UX, UE, as well as SIGGRAPH, UXNet, and other competitors for shelf space in our brains, view as their turf for human-computer interaction and communication? Some had an inkling, I’m sure, but others would not have known about the Apple Macintosh, which was about to be launched and were content to explore the challenges of thinking out the best way to present information in text screens of 24 lines by 80 characters.
