A Hypertensive Spike

Abstract

The incidence of drug related stroke continues to increase as use becomes more widespread. Cocaine use is a recognised cause of stroke through vasoactive effects illustrated by this case. One possible mechanism is the effects of a sharp blood pressure increase (hypertensive spike). Ischaemic stroke can occur through a variety of other mechanisms. It should be kept in mind that even if drug use is confirmed other causes of young stroke may contribute in a synergistic manner to result in either infarct or haemorrhage.
