Abstract

Conventional two-dimensional (2D) transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) continues to play an essential role in the peri-operative care of patients undergoing cardiac surgery. However, TEE imaging has progressed to the point that real-time (RT) rendered three-dimensional (3D) images of cardiac anatomy can now be obtained readily and displayed in the operating room. Armed with conventional 2D and now 3D images, clinicians can provide surgeons with invaluable, real-time imaging of cardiac pathology perioperatively to confirm preoperative diagnoses, define new intra-operative findings, and provide detailed information that can help guide surgical planning. In this chapter, the different types of 3-D TEE images are discussed and specific examples are provided with an emphasis on images of the mitral valve for assisting mitral valve repairs.
