Abstract

For the benefit of the readers with little background in power systems, we present topics in power systems and grid operations that are relevant to Smart Grid communications. Power system practitioners may also skim through this chapter to appreciate the context behind the material presented in the rest of this book. Definitions of basic electrical quantities such as power and energy and a brief overview of alternate current systems and phasors are presented. Elements of power generation, transmission, and distribution systems are described with a brief introduction to topics relevant to Smart Grid communications.
