Is Bare-Metal Stenting a Worthwhile Adjunctive Technique in Acute Type A Dissection?

Book cover Controversies in Aortic Dissection and Aneurysmal Disease

Abstract

Bare-metal stents have been developed and employed as an adjunctive technique in patients operated on for acute type A aortic dissection mainly to facilitate thrombosis of the false lumen, but also to seal endoleaks and create stent-graft landing zones. However, in the first case, results have not been as satisfactory as expected and bare metal stenting for that purpose seems to add no more advantage than surgery alone. Refinement of stent design is needed and indication of stent deployment better defined. In the second case, results have been more encouraging, but case series are too small and follow-up too short.
