Abstract

Ventricular arrhythmias often present clinical challenges to the practitioner from diagnostic as well as therapeutic perspectives. Due to their gravity, arrhythmias of the ventricle need to be diagnosed accordingly and treated promptly as they can quickly become life threatening. Understanding critical aspects of ventricular arrhythmias such as initiating mechanisms, proper risk stratification and response to medical and ablation therapies is needed to properly care for these patients. This chapter is intended to provide a concise yet thorough review on the topic.

Clinically proven useful tools to assess diagnostic criteria of ventricular origin will be discussed. Conditions ranging from ventricular arrhythmia related to normal heart and benign prognosis will be distinguished from arrhythmia related to scar and diseased hearts that require more immediate attention and treatment. The care of patients with pharmacologic therapies will be outlined and nonpharmacologic therapies will be summarized. Recognition of patients with recurrent arrhythmias and at high mortality risk is emphasized along with therapeutic strategies.

Particular attention to invasive electrophysiologic tests including activation and entrainment mapping, and specific technical information as well as ablation strategies, will be detailed.
