Abstract

Renal surgery and renal tract surgery has undergone a gradual “revolution” like many areas of surgical practice with the development of lithotripsy for stone disease and laparoscopic and robotic surgery for renal resection. Technical refinements allowing partial removal of kidney parenchyma have also led to the ability to preserve renal tissue that would otherwise have been resected through total nephrectomy, and this is now becoming the relative standard where it is indicated. This chapter brings together a range of renal surgical procedures with the aim of providing information on complications, risks, and consequences of those procedures. For information on associated procedures, refer to the relevant chapter or volume.
