Abstract
In CG, everything is measured. Polygons are made of vertices whose locations are measured from the global origin along coordinate axes that provide orientation. Pixels in texture maps have XY coordinates as well as colors that are measured amounts of red, green, and blue. Lights are located based on measurements; their intensity is a measurement, as are all of their other variables. Transformations are measurements of the difference between one position and another. All things in a CG environment rely on measurements for their depiction. Modeling then, is measuring. The quality of the measurements used in a CG scene will determine the quality of the scene itself.

Perceptual learning has long been an important goal of art education. Empirical findings on this issue are distributed over individual studies and narrative reviews. This review uses statistical procedures (so-called meta-analyses) to integrate the research on the effects of art education on both visual-spatial ability and aesthetic perception. A literature search produced 30 relevant experimental studies concerning visual-spatial ability and 39 studies concerning aesthetic perception. The studies were published between 1960 and 1990. No significant education effect on visual-spatial ability was found, but a medium education effect on aesthetic perception exists in the studies that have been conducted. Highest average effects on visual-spatial ability were achieved with young children, while the opposite held for effects on aesthetic perception. A combination of the study of art works and studio art proved to be the most effective in educating the perception of aesthetic properties. Possible educational implications are examined.
