Technology Acquisition by Collaboration: A Conceptual Framework

Abstract

Collaboration has become a recurrent practice in business to acquire technology; however, it can be a risky option when the factors that may affect the outcomes are unknown. A large number of papers have explored the impact of different factors on the performance of technology acquisitions and collaborations, but no framework has been proposed that integrates all the factors that influence the acquisition of technology by means of collaboration. This chapter aims to fill this gap in the existing literature. Through an analysis of the academic literature, a conceptual framework is presented that provides an overview of the key aspects that have influence on the performance of technology acquisitions by collaboration. The evidence suggests that five types of factors are relevant: contextual issues, technology uncertainty, strategic alignment, structural match and coordination capability.
