Abstract
Culture is about using a “similarity of approach, outlook, and priorities” to reach a common goal. That universal goal in healthcare and surgery is clear—provide quality, safe, efficient, patient-centered care. How best to achieve this goal, however, remains unclear. This chapter will outline the differences between organizational climate and culture, the current methods for measuring safety climate and culture, and finally ways to expand our current understanding of this vital facet of surgical care in order to ultimately enact change.
