Abstract

Infection in the diabetic foot is a feared complication, and rightly so since it can result in amputation; infection is associated with amputation either as a final insult to the foot on top of other pre-existing problems, or as an overwhelming and destructive acute event necessitating amputation in its own right. The management of diabetic foot infection requires a multi-disciplinary approach and antibiotics, a focus of this chapter, are usually necessary, but rarely sufficient, to control infection and it consequences. This chapter highlights the fact that consideration of the role of antibiotics must be part of a more general understanding of all other essential steps in the management of infection in the diabetic foot.
