Abstract

This chapter looks at the role of the orthopaedic surgeon in dealing with the diabetic patient who has foot complications. Orthopaedic surgeons have a role in the multi-disciplinary management of diabetics, and a particular part to play when there is deformity, fracture, bony prominence and infection. Orthopaedic surgeons have a part to play in recognising the diabetic foot at-risk. This chapter does not cover the issues around providing orthopaedic surgery for patients with known and controlled diabetes, but rather deals with the situation where foot and ankle complications have occurred.
