Abstract
Intestinal stomas or enterostomies are an important and essential part of a colorectal surgeon’s repertoire. Their function is to divert the fecal stream when necessary. Indications are the prevention of complications in anorectal sepsis or low rectal anastomosis, the treatment of fecal incontinence and severe proctocolitis, and the avoidance of an anastomosis in intra-abdominal sepsis. Complications, such as ischemia/necrosis, retraction and stenosis, and prolapse are the cause of bad quality of life, frequently necessitating surgical repair.
