Abstract
The indications for surgery on the mitral and tricuspid valves and rationale for intervention have been very clearly described in the most recent international guidelines from the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association and European Society for Cardiology. This chapter summarises the recommendations from these guidelines, which are categorized into a number of classes of recommendations based on three different levels of evidence. The Class of Recommendation (COR) represents an estimate of the size of the treatment effect, with consideration given to the risks versus benefits, as well as the evidence and agreement that a given treatment or procedure is or is not useful or effective, or in some situations may cause harm. The Level of Evidence (LOE) represents an estimate of the certainty or precision of the treatment effect.
