The Computerization of a Work Process: A Case Study of the Long-term Effects on Professional Skills

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Artificial Intelligence and Society ((HCS))

Abstract

The transcript of the taped discussion at the end of Chapter 1 reveals an unforeseen consequence of the computerization of the County Agricultural Boards. It was the office staff, and not the forest rangers, who manned the terminals.

  5. ANDERSSON, John (dissertation) Industriföretagets produktionsstyrning Ind Eko Org, The Institute of Technology, Stockholm, 1974, is influenced by Danielsson’s sedimentation principle. John Andersson identifies three phases in systems development in production management in an industrial company: ‘the investigation’ (commonly called ’systems analysis’), ’synthesis’ (’systems design’) and change (’implementation’). These phases are not separable in time. The process of change starts at the time people in an organization know that a new system is to be installed. This has an effect on the existing system, which means that the subject to be analyzed changes in the course of the investigation process, particularly in terms of employees’ attitudes and expectations.

  11. Professions which act as a filter in information transfer- so-called intermittent people - secretaries, consultants, etc. - are on the increase in society. The growth of intermittent functions as a new professional group is, according to the English telecommunications expert, Colin Cherry, a probable development when new technology is introduced in working life. The relevance of Colin Cherry’s interpretation is verified in the computerization of forest valuation (see GORANZON, Bo, 1973, p. 1 ).

  17. The average age of the forest rangers was 44, and the average length of service was 15 years. The following division by type of work was noted: Forest valuations: 40% Purchase and sales: 20% Land purchase: 30% Other: 10% Computerization released an extra 12 hours a week to be spent on land acquisition and purchasing and selling (Göranzon, 1977).
