Summary
The tank ventilator, a long established method of treating acute and chronic respiratory failure, including exacerbation of C.O.P.D., is the object of increasing interest. While the functional principle has remained unchanged from the early models, modern ventilators allow a more sensitive and systematic control of respiratory variables, with both positive and negative pressure settings.
Tank-assisted respiration can provide an alternative to intubation in a variety of respiratory conditions, including kyphoscoliotic and neuromyopathic forms.
Practical examples are provided.
The need for more satisfactory monitoring to supplement arterial blood gas analysis of tankventilated patients is stressed.
