Abstract
The special senses are specially adapted extero-receptor organs which receive and transduce stimuli from the external environment. They are capable of transducing physical and chemical stimuli into nerve impulses which are transmitted via cranial nerves to the brain for integration and conscious perception. The special senses and their cranial nerves are: olfactory epithelium (olfactory nerve), eye (optic nerve), taste buds (trigeminal, glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves) and vestibulocochlear apparatus (vestibulocochlear nerve).
