Abstract

The word dyspnea, which refers to a respiratory sensation, comes from the Greek dus which means abnormal or difficult, and from pnein which means breathing. Thus, dyspnea could correspond to a sensation of either abnormal breathing or difficult breathing, the two meanings not being equivalent. The medical approach tends to differentiate the abnormal from the normal.
