Abstract

The goal of respiration is to bring oxygen to tissues and to take carbon dioxide away from tissues. The respiratory and cardiocirculatory systems cooperate in this task. The former deals with the transfer of respiratory gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) between air and blood, whereas the latter brings respiratory gases from blood to tissues and vice versa. To achieve these goals, both systems are composed of a gas exchanger (the lungs and the capillary bed, respectively) and of a mechanical pump (the respiratory muscles and the heart). Therefore respiratory failure can be due to gas exchanger and/or to pump failure in both respiratory and cardiocirculatory systems. We will focus our attention on the failure of the respiratory system, particularly on pump failure.
