Abstract

Pulmonary rehabilitation for patients with chronic lung disease traditionally included interventions designed to improve the position of the diaphragm, breathing exercises based on pursed lips breathing, relaxation, and enhancement of abdominal excursion, and physical exercise training. Newer training programs have been designed specifically to enhance the endurance of the respiratory muscles. This review summarizes the results of these interventions, especially with regard to their effects on respiratory muscle function, capacity for physical exercise, and ability to conduct activities of daily living.
