Abstract
In this preliminary chapter, we review some of the basic concepts and results used in the remainder of the book. The main purpose of this chapter is to collect all of these results in a single place, so that a reader can become aware at once as to what background he/she needs in order to be able to understand the material that follows. Though some attempt is made to begin from first principles and to give a few proofs and examples, it must be emphasized that the chapter is not intented to be a complete treatment of the topics mentioned. In particular, a reader who is encountering a topic for the first time is encouraged to consult one of the standard references cited at the end of the chapter.
